Maxalt (rizatriptan) is a triptan medication used to treat migraine headaches with or without aura and, to a lesser extent, cluster headaches. It has little to no effect on other types of headaches.

This medication is used to abort headaches that have already begun. It will not prevent additional migraines or cluster headaches from developing in the future.

Triptan medications are one of the most effective treatments known for migraines. Though the exact mechanism of how triptans work---or why migraines develop, for that matter---is not fully understood, it is thought that triptans reduce pain and other symptoms by constricting blood vessels, interfering with pain signals and inhibiting production of chemicals that cause pain and inflammation.

• Take 5 to 10 mg at the earliest symptoms of a migraine.

• Do not exceed 30 mg in a 24 hour period.

Most patients start treatment with 5 mg doses, taking 10 mg only if 5 mg proves insufficient. Effectiveness is very much dose-dependent; higher doses provide greater benefit as far as eliminating a migraine, but higher doses also carry greater risk of potentially serious side effects.

Maxalt may be taken with or without food. Taking with food may help prevent stomach-related side effects, if experienced, but effects are typically felt quicker if taken on an empty stomach.

Maxalt for Cluster Headaches

Maxalt sees some off-label use for cluster headaches. Similar to use in migraines, results are best if taken at the earliest symptoms.

Cluster headaches are particularly time-sensitive when using triptans; if taken at later stages, many patients unfortunately experience no relief at all. This makes regular tablets---which take 15 to 30 minutes to start working---less than ideal for most cluster headaches. Precautions before Use
